Flat spots and micro-cracks that develop on tungsten carbide inserts can and do affect performance in many ways. Flat spots result in increased "torque" which may break or "shear" the carbide insert. A broken piece of tungsten carbide will surely damage the remaining inserts in relatively short time resulting in bit failure. Likewise, "micro-cracks" on the outer surface of the carbide insert have a tendency to weaken the structural integrity of the insert leading to premature breakage.
A regular grinding program can minimize these potential problems while maintaining the highest possible levels of drilling performance.
